Chapter Eight

When we arrived at the hanger for our flight to St. Vincent to meet Michael’s family, I was surprised to see Jake standing in front of a new plane. “The new Cessna Citation M2,” Michael said.

“What you think, Mr. Black?” Jake said as we got closer.

“She’s beautiful, Jake. You been up in her yet?”

“Are you kidding?” Jake laughed. “I had to hurry to get back here and get her gassed up and ready for you.” Then he looked at me. “Good morning, Mrs. Black; morning, children.”

“Good morning, Jake.”

“Jake, this is my sister, Scarlett.”

“Nice to meet you, Scarlett,” Jake said with a smile.

“Very nice to meet you, too, Jake.”

“How long is our flight today, Jake?” I asked.

“Flying time to Saint Vincent is about five hours, thirty-five minutes. Of course, that may vary depending on wind speeds.”

While Michael, Napoleon and Jake loaded our luggage, Scarlett and I got the children on the plane. Once that was done, they boarded the plane. Michael came and sat next to me and as soon as he was seated, Michelle got out of her seat and came to us.

“Can I sit in your lap, Daddy?”

“No, baby. You need to sit in your seat with your seatbelt fastened.”

“But Easy’s sitting in Mommy’s lap,” Michelle said, and I smiled.

“Easy is about to climb down from there and sit in his own seat too. Aren’t you, young man?”

“Yes, Daddy.”

“Good man.”

Michael got up and made sure that Michelle and Easy’s seatbelts were fastened before coming back and sitting next to me. Michael took my hand in his and kissed it.

“You okay?” I asked him.

“I’m great.” He kissed my hand again. “Next stop Kingstown, Saint Vincent.”

It was six hours later when we touched down at E. T. Joshua Airport. Scarlett says that the airport was named for Ebenezer Theodore Joshua, the first chief minister of Saint Vincent. I looked at Scarlett, she was looking out the window as the Cessna taxied down the runway and came to a stop.

“They’re here!” she shouted.

“Who?” I asked.

“My—” Scarlett looked at Michael. “Our brothers.”

As soon as Jake opened the door, Scarlett was out of her seat and out the door. Sherraine and Gordy weren’t far behind. They shared a group hug and then her brothers picked up Sherraine and Gordy.

“You ready?” I asked.

“As I’ll ever be,” Michael said and stood up. I looked at him and tried to put myself in his position. Michael is a man that is used to being in absolute control of every situation. But here, now, he isn’t. This isn’t his island and these are, but at the same time, are not his people. I stood up and took his hand.

“Let’s get them,” I said.

Michael and I got off with the children and walked hand in hand toward them, with Michelle rushing to get to them and Easy pulling at my hand. I looked at Scarlett, I had never seen her as happy as she was in that moment. Then she rushed up to Michael, and grabbed his hand like he was taking too long to get to them.
